At the beginning of the Edo period, this village prospered through iron sand production and Christianity. However, the shogunate's ban on Christianity resulted in more than 300 people being martyred (executed). Prayer caves and martyrdom sites are scattered throughout the mountains. The area also has a hidden Christian (Christian) history museum, developed as Martyrs' Park, and The Cruz Hall features a life-size statue of Jesus Christ by the renowned sculptor Yasutake Funakoshi.
