"This is an elementary school where you can stay overnight." Yonezawa City in Yamagata Prefecture is a two-hour bullet train ride from Tokyo. Yonezawa Misawa Elementary School | Tococoto is an elementary school that utilizes the former Yonezawa City Misawa Higashi Elementary School and offers overnight stays and local experiences. Enjoy the bonfire and starry sky. There is also a natural hot spring nearby that has been around for a thousand years. There will be a sports day in the gymnasium, glamping in the classroom, and board games and a takoyaki party in the evening. The classrooms on the second floor are lined with exciting dormitory-style beds that feel like a secret base, and can accommodate up to 36 people. In addition, you can enjoy a special time with your family and friends at the ""Glamping Classroom,"" which has camping equipment on permanent display. Movies can be projected onto the large walls of the classroom, and games can be played. This is a unique place where you can have fun without worrying about time. There are stories that can now be told in a place where children once studied. The chalk marks left on the blackboard, the casual conversations you have with your friends. Memories suddenly come back to me as I gather around the bonfire at night. Meeting local people adds to the pages of my memories. Stay The classrooms where children once studied are now bedrooms. Classrooms for training and gyms for sports. The baths are at Onogawa Onsen, a 5-minute drive away. At night, sit around the bonfire and chat, and in the morning, enjoy Yamagata rice and soft-boiled eggs. Each room has curtains, allowing you to stay in a private space. The accommodation is divided into two rooms, separated by gender. 2. Play and learn You can stay overnight, take a day trip, or rent the entire school building. Stay in a secret base-style bed, enjoy bonfires and BBQs, and experience local activities such as weaving and farming. Feel free to play in the gymnasium or on the school grounds. At night, enjoy a soak in the hot springs at Onogawa Onsen under the starry sky. 3. Plan There are things that can only be born in this place. Some people want to make their usual training camp a little more special, hold an event, or even have a class reunion. What will be created depends on the thoughts of the people who gather here. So, where do we start here? ▼What's Yonezawa like? Yonezawa is a castle town in southern Yamagata Prefecture, and is attractive for its historical culture, including Uesugi Shrine! You can enjoy Yonezawa beef, hot springs, and the beautiful nature of the four seasons. Nearby is Onogawa Onsen, which uses 100% natural hot spring water. ▼About the facilities 【Dormitory bed】 There are a total of 36 dormitory beds, each large enough for adults to sleep comfortably. 18 in the men's room and 18 in the women's room. There are power outlets and reading lights at the bedside, and when you close the curtains you have your own space. You can experience the excitement of being in a secret base. Reservations can be made for just one person. There is also a plan to rent the entire school building. 【Empty classroom】 There are two classrooms that can be used freely. Including the former library, there are three rooms in total, and you can arrange the desks and chairs as you like. Please use them for meals, workshops, or any other purpose. 【Gymnasium】 A gymnasium the size of two basketball courts. It can also be used for recreational activities and practice matches. Cottage Hideaway Surrounded by Apple Orchards with a View of Mount Iwaki This large log house features a spacious wooden deck and offers a luxurious location where you can experience the seasonal beauty of Aomori’s Tsugaru region. It accommodates up to 6 guests and is available for exclusive use. Enjoy the natural warmth of wood unique to log houses. The living room welcomes you with a high vaulted ceiling, a wide wooden deck, a wood-burning stove, and comfortable sofas. Adjacent to the living room is a tatami room, which offers the much-desired view of Mount Iwaki from its windows. The entire property has been recently renovated and is equipped with Wi-Fi to ensure a comfortable stay. The 2,000-tsubo (approx. 6,600 m²) property and log house provide a private space exclusively for guests during their stay. The house is set slightly back from the road, giving it the feel of a secluded retreat. Whether you wish to relax peacefully or enjoy lively times with family and friends, we have prepared an environment to satisfy all guests. Guests staying for one week or longer are eligible for a long-term stay discount. Accommodation Plan The log house (cottage) is exclusively rented to one group at a time, with a maximum capacity of 6 guests. The rate is the same for up to 3 guests; from the 4th guest onward, an additional charge applies per person. Child Policy: There are no special child rates. Children aged 2 and above are charged the same rate as adults. Please include children aged 2 and above in the total number of guests when booking. Important Notice: Entry to the accommodation is limited to registered guests listed on the reservation. Meals Meals are not included in the accommodation fee. Guests may dine out at nearby restaurants or cook in the facility’s kitchen. The kitchen is equipped with a 3-burner induction cooktop, refrigerator (with freezer), microwave, toaster oven, pots, frying pans, and sufficient dishes and glasses for 6 guests. Please note: Seasonings and condiments are not provided; please bring your own. Please refrain from cooking foods with strong odors or using hot plates inside. Recommended Dining Nearby Restaurant Miyuki (Kuroishi Komise Street): Enjoy local specialties like Tsuyu Yakisoba (sauce noodles), sushi, rice bowls, and elegant Japanese set meals. Kids’ menu available. Jumonji Café (Kuroishi Komise Street): Located at Komise sightseeing base “Matsunoyu Exchange Hall,” this café offers Asian cuisine. Enjoy authentic Malaysian coconut chicken curry produced by Malaysian native Lee Nyok Peng. There are many other dining options around Kuroishi Komise Street. Rooms First Floor: Living room, Japanese-style tatami room (8 tatami mats), kitchen, toilet, bathroom. The living room has a wood-burning stove available for guest use (please avoid cooking with it due to risks of spillover or burning). If you prefer not to use the stove, the room is heated by air conditioning and heaters, keeping it warm even in winter. The tatami room connected to the living room can accommodate up to 4 sets of futons for sleeping and features a kotatsu (heated table) to enjoy warmth before bedtime. Wood Stove Use: Upon arrival, the room will be preheated with air conditioning. For a warmer, cozier atmosphere, please consider using the wood stove. You must purchase firewood provided by Cottage Hideaway (one bundle for 2,000 yen). Bringing your own firewood is prohibited. Firewood prices may vary by season—please inquire. One bundle lasts about 3 hours. Please notify us in advance if you wish to use it. Towels: Each guest receives one bath towel and one face towel regardless of the number of nights. Please wash and reuse as needed. Additional towels are not provided. Second Floor: One bedroom with two single beds and an open space. The open space is divided into two areas: a work area (or dad’s space) with a desk, sofa, and table; and a kotatsu area (or children’s space) with a low sofa and kotatsu for a warm, enjoyable time. The low sofa can also be used as a sofa bed. Note: The staircase to the second floor is somewhat steep and slippery—please be careful when going up and down. Important Notes Winters are cold and snowy. Guests arriving by car must use winter tires or chains. The host cannot respond to vehicle troubles during your stay. The host is not responsible for injuries during your stay. Please ensure you have travel insurance. Ceiling heights near the stairs and roof slope on the second floor are low; watch your head. Be cautious of snow falling from the roof in winter. Guests have free access to the property and garden during their stay but must not enter host’s private storage sheds without permission.
