This historic home sits on the banks of the Saint John River and features 8 rooms. They vary from large traditional rooms and deluxe suites ( all with lovely ensuite bathrooms and Kings Size beds) to two basic rooms ( Queen size bed and private bath just outside the guest room). There is a room for every budget and every taste! Each room has a unique personality.
The home, built in 1903, has been lovingly restored and renovated and tastefully blends its heritage with modern comforts. It opened in May 2019. Delicious breakfasts are included and feature local and family favourites served in the large dinning room or front porch.
The riverside beach is a popular place to relax and enjoy stunning sunsets .

By the River is located in the heart of a popular neighbourhood and It is a short walk, bike or drive to major attractions, markets, galleries, events and activities in the vibrant city of Fredericton.

Carlton Executive Suite

Named for Governor Guy Carlton who declared Fredericton a city in 1755, this suite provides all the best that By The River has to offer. The large bedroom features a king-size bed and panoramic views offered by the windows built into the home’s turret. Additionally, this suite includes a private bathroom, sitting room with gas fireplace and a covered balcony which allows guests to enjoy Fredericton’s natural beauty. This stately suite is perfect for guests looking to get-away in perfect luxury. This suit is located on the second floor.

This suite is the perfect oasis for anyone looking for a romantic getaway. Known for his lyrical and romantic poetry, Bliss Carman was a native Frederictonian who is known as one of Canada’s Confederate Poets. This suite is located on the third floor allowing guests to take in the beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding landscape from the suite’s bay window or by standing in the centre of the turret. In addition to these views, the spacious bedroom offers a king size bed and plenty of room to relax together. The exquisite 4-piece bathroom includes a jacuzzi tub and spacious shower. Before it was called the Saint John River, Indigenous peoples called it Wolastoq, the beautiful and bountiful river. Between 1894 and 1908 the Aberdeen steamboat made three trips a week along the St. John River between Fredericton and Woodstock. Named for the boat, this suite offers majestic views of the river and the city from the large windows. The riverside suite also features a king-size bed and private bathroom with spacious shower. Violet Room

Named for New Brunswick’s provincial flower, this 3^rd floor room brings the brightness of spring to the comfort of your room. The Purple Violet was named New Brunswick’s provincial flower in 1936, based on input from the Women’s Institute, the Lieutenant Governor and the province’s schoolchildren. Featuring a queen-sized bed, the suite also offers a semi-private sitting room* which leads into a private, 3-piece bathroom(external to room). This room is located on third floor.

Basic room: Queen size bed, private bathroom(in hallway), attic, share sitting room

Please note that while the Mary Tibbits Room and Violet Room each have a private bathroom(in hallway), they share a sitting room. These rooms are the perfect option for two couples travelling together. Should you wish to book these rooms together, the sitting room may be closed off from the rest of the third floor, providing our guests with additional privacy and comfort.

Mary Tibbits Room

This room is named for Mary K. Tibbits, the first female graduate of the University of New Brunswick. Although she faced strong opposition, Mary Tibbits enrolled in the University of New Brunswick in 1886 and was awarded a Bachelor of Arts (Honours in English) in 1889 along with the Governor General’s Gold Medal for academic proficiency. This 3^rd floor room boasts of large windows which offer a view of the St. John river. This room offers a queen-sized bed, and a semi-private sitting room* which leads to a private 3-piece bathroom with a soaker tub(external to room). This room is located on third floor.

Our Breakfast

We offer a daily hot entree and feature local and family favourites. Every effort is made to use products grown locally. We provide baked goods made fresh daily, fresh fruit, yogurt and cheese. Juice and locally roasted Roticana coffee and a variety of teas are also served. We cater to most dietary needs but ask that you advise us in advance so that we can provide you with the best possible service.If you have any allergies please let us know as much in advance as possible so we can provide you an appropriate alternative. We also offer vegetarian options, but please let us know the night before if possible.
Due to private reason, the room rate not include breakfast anymore in 2024.

What amenities do you offer?
We are pleased to offer all guests wireless internet access. Although phones are not available in the suites, guests are welcome to use the front desk phone for local calls. Other amenities include air conditioning, secure bike and kayak storage facility, and free off-the-street parking. Guests are also welcome to enjoy our spacious Sitting Room to rest and catch up with friends. Paddle Yoga lessons and Kayak rentals are available, too.
How do I make a reservation?
You can use our website www.bytheriverbnb.ca to make your reservation easily. Also you are welcome to contact Coral and Hao by phone (506-454-5602 ) or email (bytheriver301@gmail.com) to make your reservation. All of our rates are based in Canadian Dollars and room rates do not include tax.
What is your cancellation policy?
Free cancel before 72 hours check in. By The River is an intimate bed & breakfast with a limited number of individually unique rooms. We depend on our secure, advance reservations for continued, successful operation of the business. We ask that you kindly notify us as soon as possible if you need to change or cancel your reservation so that we can rebook the room.
What is your policy on smoking and pets?
For the comfort of all of our guests, By The River is completely pet and smoke free. Should you wish to smoke, please ask about the appropriate location to do so.
What time is check-in and check-out?
Check-in time is between 3:00pm and 6:00pm. Check-out time is 11:00am. If these times do not work for you please contact us and we will be happy to make alternate arrangements.
How many guests can each room accommodate?
Most of our suites offer queen or king sized beds which are suitable for two adults. Some rooms may be able to accommodate additional guests and in these cases a charge of $35 per additional person will be incurred.
Our bed and breakfast offers guests a peaceful and tranquil place to get away. For this reason, children under 12 years of age may need prior arrangements for staying with us.
Do you rent your grounds for private events?
Our grounds can be rented on an hourly rate for your convenience. Our beautiful house provides the perfect setting for any event from weddings to reunions, birthday celebrations or corporate retreats. Packages will be negotiated on an individual basis and may include indoor or outdoor space as well as catering. Please contact us for package details and pricing.
